A WORD OF CAUTION
Brooks Falls is not a network television show. Gore and violence will not be edited out. The landscape is full of beautiful and captivating events, but it can also be filled with infanticide (the killing of cubs), violent bear to bear mauling, and sadly, injured bears. It is also quite common to see bears degloving (skin being torn off) and eating a live fish while it frantically tries to escape. At Brooks Falls, you will see wonder and splendor. And it is also possible that you see how harsh nature can be. Having a good telephoto lens will give you a front row seat to all of it. I often find it very hard to watch, let alone photograph, some of what I see. Nature is beautiful, but often very harsh.
Pictured Above: a bear is seen “high-grading.” Selectively accessing the most nutritious part of the fish (brains & skin). He will eat the brains, and skin, and then toss the rest aside for scavengers.
Always obey all Park Ranger directives.
